Rebecca Valley

Back to Issue 3.4

January in the Japanese Garden

The ranunculus either coming alive or dying

I like to think of love when I’m alone

I like to be alone to remember
the ranunculus, to admire

The light at 4pm as it disappears
behind sandstone buildings

I’ve been wrong about so many things

Could be more forgiving

I’ve tried to take photos
of birds as they come to roost

Knowing you can’t photograph birds

Knowing you can’t photograph anything

Anyway, I let the lovers have
their private moment
by the waterfall

And watch the koi,
who look at me
as if we’ve never met

Of course I know them

Their circle mouths make the world
